The Perrin Technique is now offered at Markham Lymphatic Centre

We’re happy to announce that we now offer clients a new and exciting treatment option - The Perrin Technique.  Ann is one of the very select practitioners trained in this technique and one of the first to offer this treatment in Canada.  Some of you have questions on The Perrin Technique – see below:

What is The Perrin Technique?

The Perrin Technique is a manual system of diagnosis and treatment that has helped hundreds of patients since 1989.  The Perrin Technique was developed due to a chance discovery during the clinical practice of a Manchester osteopath, Dr Raymond Perrin.

Has it been tested?

Yes! Its effectiveness was tested using two separate clinical trials. The first examined the change in the symptoms following a year of treatment. The second repeated the first study and used MRI scanning to explore further the possible mechanisms of the improvement.

What is the science behind the technique?

Raymond Perrin’s research at the University of Salford in conjunction with the University of Manchester, coupled with the hundreds of successful clinical case studies and the latest findings in neurophysiology, has provided strong evidence that lymphedema involves a disturbance of the drainage of toxins from the brain and muscles. These poisons often enter the body through viruses, bacteria, other microbes, parasitic infections, or environmental toxins such as pesticides.

However, many toxins are simply an overproduction of chemicals naturally produced within the body to help the immune system fight infections, inflammation, and stress. Constant physical and emotional stress can lead to this type of overproduction. The excess of some toxins in the brain and
spinal cord should drain out into lymph vessels and be broken down by the body’s lymphatic system and liver. Patients have reversed drainage that leads to toxins in the central nervous system, causing dysfunction in different brain and spinal cord parts.

The initial research results can be found in the following peer-reviewed papers:

Perrin’s research has expanded our knowledge of the disease and how to treat it. In July 2005, he was awarded a doctorate by the University of
Salford for his thesis.

What happens in the initial consultation?

You will first fill out a questionnaire detailing your main medical history. Then, you will have a comprehensive consultation with Ann, which should last about 90 minutes. During the session, Ann will explain your condition and the reasons for the technique and take a detailed medical case history. This will be followed by an examination of your spine, abdomen, head, and the lymphatics of the thorax, including the breast tissue.

What happens in the treatment sessions?

The treatment aims to manually stimulate the drainage of the offending toxins from the central nervous system with gentle stroking towards both collar bones. The lymphatic fluid drains into more prominent veins, eventually reaching the liver, where the poisons are finally rendered harmless. Gentle manual treatment of the skull and spine, with relaxation of the surrounding muscles and specific lymphatic drainage techniques, eventually improves the health and function of the body as a whole.
